Meet Nicolas: When curiosity and dedication drive language learning success

This month, we’re delighted to feature Nicolas, a French student who has been on an inspiring English learning journey with us. He’s taken our VivaLing assessment every year since the beginning of his training, allowing us to track his remarkable progress and celebrate each milestone along the way.

What makes Nicolas truly special is the combination of his dedication, delightful personality, and eagerness to explore and discover—he’s a shining example of how a natural love for asking questions and uncovering new knowledge can contribute to successful language learning.

Family testimonial

“We have been using VivaLing to complement Nicolas’s English lessons at school, as well as those of his sister Charlotte, since 2021. We really like the approach of the VivaLing teachers, who adapt the lessons to each student in an attentive and constructive way. We have clearly seen Nicolas’s increased self-confidence when speaking English and the progress he has made throughout the lessons. Moreover, Nicolas and Charlotte are always happy to attend the lessons, which shows the strong relationships built with their respective coaches. I would also like to note the punctuality of the lessons, which is very important to us.”

Through the Coach’s Eyes – Coach Nadine

“Nicolas is truly a joy to teach. What strikes me most is his fantastic sense of humour and how naturally it shines through in our lessons. He is also one of the most polite and well-mannered students I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with—his kindness and respect in every interaction are remarkable.

I took over Nicolas’s training a year and a half ago and together we have been focusing on key grammar concepts including present simple and continuous tenses, demonstrative pronouns, genitive case, irregular past simple verbs, and question formation, which he now has a good grasp of.

His confidence in speaking has blossomed beautifully. He now constructs sentences independently about daily routines, chores, sports, after-school activities, and telling time. He’s also beginning to self-correct more frequently—a significant milestone in language development..

What makes Nicolas special is his curiosity, brightness, and consistent willingness to participate. He thrives in interactive activities, vocabulary games, and lessons connected to real-world topics, especially sports. His positive energy makes every session genuinely enjoyable.” – Coach Nadine

Curiosity-Driven Learning:

Curiosity acts as a powerful engine for language learning, pulling you naturally toward new words and cultural insights that spark your interest. This intrinsic motivation is amplified by immediate rewards—the thrill of expressing your thoughts, mastering a tricky grammar structure, or making someone laugh in your new language. These small victories create a self-reinforcing cycle where each success fuels curiosity and motivates the next challenge.

This principle of curiosity and reward is a core driver of VivaLing’s ViLLA pedagogy, and Nicolas perfectly embodies it in practice. His natural inquisitiveness drives him to explore vocabulary with genuine enthusiasm, while the rewards he experiences—discussing sports, conquering irregular verbs, sharing his humor—fuel his continued progress. This positive cycle is evident in his blossoming confidence and increasing independence with self-correction.

We recognize and appreciate our coaches who make learning fun and motivating, and the thousands of fantastic students who bring their positive attitudes to every class.
